Promoting environmental awareness in schools

The School Environmental Club (SEC) Namibia is on a mission to promote awareness around environmental issues and sustainability among learners, and to empower them to lead initiatives to positively impact their schools and communities.

Representatives Vancine da Silva and Faith Roerkohl said in an interview with Future Media that late last year, they launched a secondary school environmental club, and learned a lot about the environment.

“We are strong believers in educating learners from a young age because the younger the better. They learn more, and I feel they are open to new things. You know they love playing around in the sand, so the reason why we have also gone to the primary level is to implement ideas of SEC so that they can learn more about the environment,” said Roerkohl.

The team said they have quite a variety of events lined up that will entice young Namibians to have an interest in environmental issues, especially around sustainability.

“As far as primary schools are concerned, we have about 15 schools that have an interest in the club. So we are planning on doing camping, tree planting and the overall education campaign on how to keep the environment sustainable and clean,” she stated.

SEC Namibia started with a bold vision of inspiring the young generation to take meaningful action for a greener, cleaner and more sustainable future. The journey began by igniting passion and enthusiasm in high school learners, encouraging them to actively participate in environmental initiatives that could shape Namibia and the world.

With energy and creativity, they brought to life a series of hands-on activities that allow students to engage directly with sustainable efforts turning concepts into tangible actions.

“Some of the key issues we would like to address at the primary school level include tree planting, and ensuring that learners keep the environment clean. They need to know that other learners coming after them must be in such conducive environments too,” said Da Silva.

He added that everything in nature is part of the environment, and there is a need to maintain that cleanliness.

“We want to expand, and educate everyone about the importance of the environment. That’s the reason I joined SEC. I won’t be around forever, so I need to make that impact while I still can,” stated Da Silva.

SEC was founded by Inomuinjo Kapimbi, a grade 11 learner at Ella Du Plessis Secondary School in Windhoek. -psiririka@nepc.com.na
