Prosecutor in court for theft of docket

Home International Prosecutor in court for theft of docket

Windhoek

A Windhoek public prosecutor Anton Wilson yesterday found himself in the dock when he appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on 10 charges, among them alleged fraud, theft and corruption. He appeared before magistrate Justine Asino.

Wilson, who recently resigned as a public prosecutor in the office of the prosecutor general, is alleged to have used his position as a public office-bearer for his own gratification, among other charges levelled against him.

Public prosecutor Tatelo Cuthbert Lusepani explained to the court that Wilson is being charged for theft of a charge sheet, corruptly using his office for personal gain, fraud by misrepresenting a magistrate and corruptly using false documents.

It is alleged that on 9 February, 2005, Wilson used his position fraudulently by withdrawing criminal charges against Kennedy Thiongo Kasume.

In pretence Wilson wrote a letter to magistrate Vanessa Stanley that the complainant in Kasume’s case wrote a letter to have the charge against Kasume withdrawn. It is alleged that he did the same thing in the case of Alex Kagasheka, who had a case against Kasume.

According to Wilson’s charge sheet, he further used the office of the prosecutor general fraudulently by giving orders to the Namibian Police to release Kasume’s motor vehicle that was repossessed by the police. Using the same pretences, Wilson was able to have criminal proceedings of theft against Kasume discontinued by having the police close the docket with reasons that it was a civil matter.

Allegedly for his benefit, Wilson ensured that Kasume’s charge sheet contained misleading facts that were in favour of Kasume.

Even though investigations into the matter were finalised, Asino postponed the case to 3 February, 2017, in order to trace Kasune who is the second accused. The court granted Wilson bail of N$10 000 due to the seriousness of the charges that he faces.

The accused Wilson is said to be currently employed as a paralegal officer.
