Pupkewitz Megabuild celebrated the official ribbon-cutting and grand opening of its new Megabuild Lifestyle store in Kleine Kuppe last week. This N$ 220million investment represents a significant commitment to Namibia and its people, taking the Megabuild Lifestyle vision – first pioneered in 2014 – to new heights.
The keynote address was delivered by Mateus Kaholongo, deputy executive director in the private office of the Vice President.
He highlighted Pupkewitz’s role as a cornerstone of Namibia’s economic and social landscape, praising the company’s contributions to job-creation, economic growth and infrastructure development.
“We deeply appreciate Pupkewitz’s unwavering commitment and continued investment in Namibia’s future,” he stated. “The government remains dedicated to creating an enabling environment for businesses that contribute to our national development goals, including affordable housing and urban development. The role that Megabuild plays in this sector is invaluable,” he added.
Board chairman David Nuyoma declared that Namibians no longer needed to travel to Dubai, Sandton or the Cape Town Waterfront to experience excellence and ambience.
They could enjoy both at the new Megabuild Lifestyle.
He said the Group’s commitment to customer service and the values that have guided them through decades of service to Namibia remain steadfast.
“At the heart of everything we do lies our core belief, ‘Customer Satisfaction Through Service Excellence’. This is the cornerstone of our operations and the standard by which we measure our success,” Nuyoma remarked.
Andrea Barry, Group strategy director and a Pupkewitz family member, described the opening as a historic moment and a celebration of perseverance, innovation and progress.
She added that the Pupkewitz Group has been at the forefront of Namibia’s economic development for over a century, demonstrating what it truly means to be Namibian – resilient, adaptive, progressive and diverse.
“My grandfather once said ‘I have a tremendous love for this country and its people. This is where I have my roots’. That sentiment still drives us today,” Barry shared.
“The 2025 Lifestyle store embodies a fusion of convenience, inspiration and modernity, marking a significant paradigm shift in Namibia’s retail sector,” she said.
She added: “Pupkewitz Megabuild, our oldest subsidiary, has played a pivotal role in providing top-tier building materials, hardware and do-it-yourself products to businesses and consumers alike. This new development, with a total capital investment of N$220million, is yet another affirmation of our pledge to ongoing investment and economic growth in Namibia. The project stands as a testament to our century-long commitment to the country – a journey characterised by operational excellence founded on deep customer insights, trustworthy service and financial resilience.
“Throughout our history, we have maintained a strong family-driven culture that preserves our core values while extending our impact through the Pupkewitz Foundation’s meaningful community initiatives”.
In his address, managing director of Pupkewitz Megabuild Martin Schoeman reflected on the company’s journey to becoming Namibia’s oldest and largest building supply chain.
Tracing the company’s roots back to 1925 when it began as a small general dealership in Ausspannplatz, he noted key milestones, including Harold Pupkewitz’ pivotal 1946 supply deal and Phil Barry’s mid-90s modernisation of the builder’s merchant concept.
“Over the years, we’ve built our competitive edge by truly listening to our customers,” said Schoeman.
“This deep understanding of the Namibian business landscape has helped us evolve from simply selling building materials to becoming trusted advisors,” he stated.
The new Megabuild Lifestyle store offers inspiration pods for experimenting with colours and textures, expert staff in every department, a coffee shop serving beer and wine, a children’s play area and a comprehensive garden centre.
Beyond retail, the centre is anticipated to serve as a community space, hosting music concerts, family activities and markets in its parking area.
