Namibia’s music fanatics eagerly anticipate an extraordinary celebration looming, as visionary creative director and filmmaker, Othilia Tutu Mungoba, collaborates with musical curator Christian Polloni to reveal the grand spectacle titled “Ras Sheehama: 3 Decades of Sound”.
Supported by the esteemed Friends of Ras Sheehama Trust, this collaborative masterpiece honours the illustrious career of Namibia’s cherished musician and performer, Ras Sheehama.
Ras Sheehama emerged as a pioneering force in Namibian reggae music, blending reggae, Afro-fusion, and traditional Namibian sounds in the 1990s to carve a unique niche in the local music scene.
The music icon expressed his joy in celebrating three decades of musical excellence. He shared his gratitude for the support received from young artists and emphasized the importance of recognising achievements while artists are still alive.
Reflecting on the challenges faced, he highlighted the initial struggle post-independence due to limited music buying power and the absence of recording studios in the country.
“Many artists, including myself had to travel to South Africa to record music. We only had a few recording studios in Namibia, and it was very bad for us to record, and the Namibian population was small then,” he said.
Throughout his journey, Ras Sheehama’s music has carried profound cultural and social messages, addressing issues of social justice, equality, empowerment, unity, and African pride, resonating deeply with audiences both in Namibia and beyond.
The event will feature a diverse lineup of local talents spanning various artistic genres, from the soulful melodies of Big Ben to the dynamic performances of Sally Boss Madam, Exit Rockaz, ML, Ethnix, Patrick Sikiliza, North Side Rabbi, Equipped Dance Academy, and Vocal Redemption, promising an unforgettable tribute to the icon’s musical legacy.
Attendees can expect an immersive experience under captivating lights, blending dance, poetry, music videos, and live performances of Ras Sheehama’s hits like ‘Cassinga’, ‘Travelling’, ‘Inotila’, and contemporary tunes like ‘Polo Polo’, promising a treat for enthusiasts of visual and performance arts alike.
Renowned producer and DJ, DJ Kboz, known as the “Turnable King”, will collaborate with Ras Sheehama to remix his classic hit, ‘City Young Girl’, infusing it with contemporary flair in a groundbreaking partnership.
Further enhancing the event is the creative interpretation by visual artist Hage Mukwendje, whose artwork captures Ras Sheehama’s contribution to the Namibian music scene, to be auctioned off during the event, offering attendees a chance to own a piece of art. On 5 and 6 April 2024, the Nampower Convention Centre will transform into a haven of musical enchantment. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be streamed live for a fully immersive experience.
“Ras Sheehama: 3 Decades of Sound” is more than just a celebration. It is a tribute that epitomises the musician’s profound impact on the socio-cultural landscape of Namibia’s yesteryear, today, and tomorrow and I am honoured for him entrusting the team and me to execute this vision,” Mungoba said.
Despite these obstacles, she said there is growth in the music industry and praised the improvement seen in the younger generation of artists.
She further said consistency is one of the key factors in Ras Sheehama’s success.
Mungoba stressed the importance of regularly releasing music to maintain relevance in the industry, writing meaningful songs that resonate over time, drawing from personal experiences rather than fleeting encounters.
“As we celebrate Namibia’s 34th independence anniversary, I urge all Namibians to stand in solidarity and refrain from tribalism, it is harmful. Let us support each other’s growth,” she said.
Tickets are available at Webticket, ensuring that no soul misses out on this extraordinary event.
“Let the rhythm guide you as we embark on this unforgettable musical odyssey,” Mungoba said.
