The Namibia Sport Commission (NSC) announced that the squad selected to represent Namibia at next year’s African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five Games will be revealed soon.
Namibia is set to host the regional games in June next year. In preparation, the NSC held its National Youth Games (NYG) this past weekend to select a strong team to compete against other SADC nations.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, NSC Chief Administrator Freddy Mwiya expressed his satisfaction with the smooth organisation of the games, which were essential in selecting athletes for the regional event. He shared that the squad has already been identified, and preparations will begin shortly.
“We have compiled a list of athletes selected to represent Namibia at the Region Five Games, which we will be hosting in the capital next year. However, it may take a few weeks to finalise the squad, as we will need to review certain criteria such as eligibility and compliance with key elements,” Mwiya stated.
“The committee will carefully scrutinise the selected athletes before officially announcing the final team. We are pleased with the number of talented athletes identified at the recently-concluded games, and look forward to having them in camp.
The AUSC Region Five Games aim to encourage young athletes to develop their talents to represent their nations and the region on larger stages. The games also foster regional unity through a shared sports programme.
Regarding Namibia’s readiness to host the event, Timo Tjongarero, a member of the local organising committee, stated: “We have submitted a report to the AUSC outlining the facilities that will be used for the tournament. However, the AUSC will need to inspect and approve these facilities before the games commence. We are also planning to have training camps ahead of the main event next year.”
