President Nangolo Mbumba has been impressed by the number of senior citizens who have registered to vote during the ongoing General Voter Registration (GVR) exercise being conducted by the Electoral Commission of Namibia.

Speaking at the Katutura old age home yesterday, Mbumba said the elderly population in Namibia prioritises voting and registration, compared to the rest of the population.

“It is known that old people always register and vote. Which means you truly believe in your own Constitution, in your own system, and in your own government. You want stability to remain with you and with your children and grandchildren. It is proof that you believe in the laws of the country and in the progress of the country. The government is established as a result of the votes of our people,” Mbumba said.

He declared that the elderly shall have the complete freedom to vote for the candidate and the party of their choice on 27 November 2024.

“We live in a country that is at peace. Therefore, let us maintain that peace and freedom, and let there never be a situation of strife and war. Although we live in a free country, we also have to work to maintain this freedom. We cannot allow ourselves to be the result of misunderstandings and wars, because that will ruin our country,” Mbumba said.

He further urged the elderly residents to be grateful for living in a shelter where they are taken care of.

Mbumba also visited the Wanaheda industrial stalls and as well as Herero mall, in the heart of Katutura, where he reiterated the importance of concerted efforts and cooperation between government and small businesses to improve the economy and living conditions of the people of Namibia.

On the day, the Presidency also donated blankets to the elderly.

After engaging the President at the mall, some residents feel more needs to be done to improve the informal economy.
