The construction of a reservoir near grazing areas in Omuntele Constituency will assist more than six villages that for years have struggled to secure water for livestock against the backdrop of drought.
Many communal farmers have relocated their livestock to other areas where there is water.
“Those who still have cattle in the area are those who can afford to transport water to their livestock every now and then,” narrated Constituency Councillor Sacky Nangula.
Nangula said work on the construction of the reservoir has progressed well and will be completed by next March.
“Construction has commenced and pumping lines to the destined areas have already been installed. Currently the officials are busy putting up drinking troughs,” said Nangula.
He said construction of the reservoir could be a lasting solution to the water woes experienced yearly.
The councillor added that while about 70 percent of villagers have access to potable water, some communities are struggling to get water.
The councillor said he was content that at least all schools in the constituency have access to potable water.
Ambende East will also receive a 2km water pipeline before the end of this year. The rest of the area will be connected as more funds become available.
In addition, the constituency office has plans to extend water infrastructure at Onanke.
Other beneficiary areas include Elonga, Kaswakwa, Omupanda and Oshiyagaya.
Nangula said applications have already been submitted for these areas to be connected once funds are available.
Apart from the water infrastructure, the constituency office further plans to electrify all schools in the constituency.
Only five schools are not electrified, however one is expected to be electrified before the end of the year.
The constituency office has also prioritized extending network coverage to Onanke.
