Play: The Case of Jennifer Anderson
Performed by: Learners Of Westside Secondary School
Reviewer: Intila Katambo
THIS is a self-written play by learners of this Swakopmund school under the guidance and creative leadership of theatre facilitator, Richard Swartz, with a lot of potential.
To me, the play is a true re-enactment of everyday life in Namibian courts, a case in which a young woman faces trial for shooting her husband thrice in the chest. Though mixed with comedy, one just could not ignore the anguish and penetrating hatred of the accused’s mother-in-law – fascinating emotional play-acting of the highest order.
Other actors, who delivered exceptionally high quality performances, include Judge Gabriela, the state prosecutor, as well as the accused. Some of the other cameo-part actors tended to forget some of their lines and came across very nervous in this very powerful play.
It was an enjoyable 45 minutes to see these young and inexperienced youth actors acquitting themselves so well as first timers.
Assitej-Namibia should be encouraged to continue with its pioneering theatre work among learners, specifically in rural areas.
I am looking forward to the next youth theatre production scheduled for February next year.
