WINDHOEK – Armed robberies were at the order of the day on Valentine’s weekend, with police reporting several cases across the country.
Police Inspector Slogan Matheus told journalists that an unknown suspect held a man at gunpoint along the Monte Christo Road on Saturday about 04H00 and took N$800 cash from him.
The suspect then fled into the darkness and was still at large.
Police investigations continue.
Another robbery took place on Friday last week at about 12H00 when an unknown male suspect held another man at gunpoint at Katutura Pick n Pay and took N$6 400 in cash from him.
The suspect is still at large and police investigations continue.
It was also reported that five suspects who broke into a house at Maltahöhe and held the elderly occupants of the house at gunpoint on Thursday last week were arrested the next day at the Windhoek / Rehoboth police roadblock.
The suspects aged 34, 34, 32, 35 and 29 allegedly tied the hands of the 56-year-old man and his wife with shoe laces and electric cables and robbed them of cash, cellphones and jewellery valued at N$57 000.
The police mounted a manhunt since the incident was reported and managed to trace and arrest the suspects at the roadblock.
They were found in possession of N$5 500 in cash, one cellphone and jewellery worth N$48 500.
The police also recovered the two pistols that were used in the robbery after police searched the car.
The suspects were expected to appear in the Maltahöhe Magistrate Court yesterday on a charge of armed robbery and police investigations continue.
The police at Aranos are searching for suspects who allegedly broke into a house at Farm Sandvlakte about 70km from Aranos.
According to the police briefing the suspects, who gained entry by cutting through the zinc roof and breaking the ceiling, tied up the owner, a 65-year-old man, and stole his silver Toyota double cab 2×4, N$20 000 in cash, a Hi-Fi radio, voice recorders, DVD player, 7.65mm pistol and other items.
The vehicle was found abandoned about six kilometres outside Stampriet during the early morning hours of Saturday.
The suspects are still at large and police investigations continue.
In another instance of robbery, a bar lady, aged 29, was robbed by a suspect who pretended to buy a recharge voucher at Omandoda Bar in Oshikuku settlement, police reported.
It is alleged that the suspect entered the bar on Friday at about 07H00 and requested to buy a recharge voucher.
He then allegedly went over to where the bar lady was standing and started to beat her with clenched fists and used ‘cello tape’ to close her eyes.
He then allegedly made off with N$13 982 in cash and recharge vouchers worth N$11 024.
Nothing has been recovered so far and police investigations continue.
