RUNDU – The fast growing town of Rundu is going to have traffic lights at three main intersections in town before the end of this year.

The town’s chief executive officer Romanus Haironga confirmed this to New Era.

Haironga said the plan is not new but an old one that needed time to be executed with the available funds.

“We had plans and firstly our plan was to have the traffic circle done and later have robots just like in any other developing towns and when the traffic circle was done we informed the public that soon we were going to have traffic lights,” elaborated the CEO.

Work to install traffic lights is currently underway at the following intersections: Omashare Lodge intersection and next to Kavango Garage Total Service Station, which are both in the heart of town and the third at the junction connecting the road to Paradise Supermarket at the Rundu Urban Constituency office in Tutungeni.

“We decided to give the tender to Traffic Lights Signal – the company that installed traffic lights in Katima Mulilo. If there won’t be any technical delays then they will finish this month,” Haironga said upon inquiry last week on Thursday.

Furthermore, Haironga added the public should also expect the naming of some streets in Rundu by the end of January 2015. According to him this will make giving directions as well as getting to places easier because currently only a few streets have names.

He also said the tarring of the one-kilometre road leading from the magistrate’s court to Rundu Secondary School is back progress.

“The contractor JPS Investments had technical problems, the company was struggling with the project but now everything was ironed out and they have entered into agreement with Namibia Road Products (NRP) who are currently working together to finish the project and the road will be completely tarred by early January,” he said.

Roads leading to Sauyemwa clinic in Sauyemwa informal settlement, Nkarapamwe clinic in Safari location as well as Kaisosi clinic in Kaisosi informal settlement would be tarred as of next year.

Haironga urged residents to pay their dues as well as keep the town clean. “The Rundu Town Council is committed to deliver services required by law to our people, and services will come with the availability of funds. But the public should just be patient and fulfil their obligations by paying their water bills and other dues.”
He also urged people not to dump their waste at the riverside bushes but to take it to the dumpsite.
