The South African senior women’s indoor hockey team secured the Africa Indoor Cup title by beating defending champions Namibia 3-2 on penalties in the final after a 3-3 draw at the Dome in Swakopmund.

South Africa started the match on a high note, scoring their first two goals in the first quarter.

Namibia did not reply, with South Africa again adding to the tally in the third quarter. But before the end of the quarter, the Namibians replied by scoring a goal. They then scored two more goals in a great comeback to end the match 3-3. The match went into penalties, but the Namibians were not aggressive in their pursuit to score, thus ending it 3-2 in South Africa’s favour.

The visitors are now the new African champions, much to the disappointed full-house crowd.

However, both teams qualify for next year’s Indoor Hockey World Cup, which will be staged in the Croatian city Poreč from 3 to 9 February 2025.

The men’s competition saw Namibia crowned champions against South Africa.  However, the two have qualified for the World Cup. The competition started on 23 May, and ended yesterday.
