Saturday suicides rock Namibia

Six suicides were recorded countrywide by the police on Saturday, with five involving men.

A crime report issued by the police on Sunday said two of the bodies were discovered around 07h00 on Saturday.

In Otjiwarongo, the body of 51-year-old David Garab was found hanging in his room by his wife, while at Otamanzi village in the Omusati region, 55-year-old Wilbard Shaanika’s body was also found hanging in his room.

In Oshakati, 31-year-old Samuel Josua’s body was found in his bedroom around 08h00 by a housemate.

He was reportedly last seen on 8 January, when he mentioned attending his brother’s funeral.

At Elisenheim just outside Windhoek, 51-year-old Paul Vermeulen’s body was discovered at his residence around 10h00 on Saturday morning by his wife.

Meanwhile, 49-year-old Julene Angeline Schwartz’s body was found around 15h20 in the garage of her home in Mondesa, Swakopmund by her son-in-law. She was reportedly alone at the time.

The body of 25-year-old Herman Kaapanda was found hanging from a tree in a mahangu field in the Omusati region around 17h00 on Saturday.

A suicide note was reportedly found in his room.

The police indicated that investigations are ongoing in all six incidents. -Nampa
