WINDHOEK – Double murder convict Romeo Schieffer will have to wait until September to hear if he may appeal his conviction and sentence.
Judge Naomi Shivute convicted Schiefer for killing his parents, Frans and Fransiena Schieffer, both aged 50, at their home in Khomasdal on January 18, 2008. The judge sentenced him to 28 years on each of the murder counts with eight years from the second conviction ordered to run concurrently with the sentence on the first count. Judge Shivute initially said she would try to deliver her ruling by June 03. However, Judge Christi Liebenberg on Tuesday postponed the matter to September 16 on behalf of Judge Shivute who is on leave. Advocate Winnie Christians lodged the appeal on behalf of Schieffer, who was only 18 years old when the murders were committed, while State Advocate Palmer Khumalo opposed the appeal on behalf of the State. Khumalo took over after the prosecutor, who secured the conviction, former Deputy Prosecutor General Belinda Wantenaar, resigned.
