By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK A well-known Namibian engineering company last week donated 40 much-needed athletics hurdles to the sports department of the primary school at St Paul’s College in the capital. The handing over took place on the institution’s sport grounds in the presence of the learners, who all welcomed the donation from Deon Coetzee, the owner of K. Golin Engineering. “I feel it is my civil and social duty to support the St Paul’s Primary School’s sport development programme. Hence this donation,” said Coetzee at the short ceremony. “Initially we wanted to buy the much-need 40 hurdles from the company and we were sourcing the money from our various fundraising efforts. We then got the message that Deon Coetzee would donate the equipment for free to our school,” said a grateful principal, Lesley Saunders, at the occasion. She formally thanked the company owner on behalf of the learners and her staff for assistance rendered to the school in its new approach to sport development. “Many modern children watch a great deal of television, play computer games, spend lots of time in cars, on cell phones and in malls, instead of taking part in sport activities. Over the years we have noted an increase in the number of children who experience difficulties relating to socializing, communicating, emotional adjustment, concentration, listening and learning. We hope this equipment will help stimulate our learners to take part in sport,” Saunders said.
