School suspends classes over virus fears

OMUTHIYA – A private school in Katima Mulilo, Mavuluma Adventist Private School, has suspended face-to-face teaching and learning following a suspected case of Covid-19. A Grade 3 pupil was reportedly in contact with one of the latest positive cases of a healthcare worker.

In a notice, issued on Monday, school principal George Nchindo informed parents the learning institution has decided to temporarily close face-to-face for 14 days, effective yesterday until 4 August.

Parents were advised to look for any signs of possible infection and to inform the school as soon as possible.

“The school is in a critical situation; there is one possible contact of a Covid-19 case with a healthcare worker who tested positive. It is for this reason that parents are advised to keep their children safe. This possible contact is a Grade 3 learner,” reads the notice.

Meanwhile, Nchindo was uncooperative when he was contacted for more details regarding the issue. “I do not talk to people I don’t know; anyone can pretend to be a journalist. Whoever needs information should personally come to our offices,” he said.

So far, there are three confirmed Covid-19 positive cases in Zambezi region: a Malawian and a Namibian who returned from abroad and the health care employee.
