Veteran sports journalist and editor of the monthly Namibia Sports Magazine, Helge Schutz, scooped the honours at the annual FNB Sports Awards during a special function held in Windhoek on Friday.

The soft-spoken Schutz was the recipient of two top awards in the category for the combined Best Website Sport Online/Online Reporting and the overall Best News Reporter of the Year.

Die Republikein’s Boet Mathews who has become a regular on the podium in the last couple of years had to play second fiddle this time around when he was chosen runner up in the category for the Best News Reporter of the Year.

However, Mathews brushed aside challenges from Schutz and the Namibian newspaper’s Corry Ihuhua in the category for “Best Sport Column” retaining the trophy he won last year.

Controversy continued to plague the Annual Sports Awards when Mathews, the former Young Ones playmaker, won the Best Print Media Story of the year.
This accolade would under normal circumstances have placed him in pole position to walk away with the coveted overall Sports Reporter of the Year.

There was no winner in the category for Best Photographer as the organisers apparently messed up big time with the entries.

Her fellow sports reporters chose Natasha Diergaardt of Namibia Press Agency (Nampa) as winner in the category Reporters’ Reporter of the Year Award.
