The first batch of school uniforms for the San learners of the Mutsumi Primary School in Corridor 13 in the Aminuis Constituency in the Omaheke region have been handed over to the principal.

This is courtesy of the Semoy San Development Assistance Project, named after the Semoy fishing company that has committed itself to sponsoring the project with N$500,000. Semoy fishing has been assisting learners of the !Xoo San community of Queen Sofia with a social responsibility educational assistance in the form of the provision of school uniforms since 2013. The school uniforms include a skirt, shirt, jersey for girls, pants, shirt and jersey for boys, which have been manufactured at the !Xoo traditional headquarters by five identified women from the community. The women involved in the project have been be paid a monthly allowance and, the project that is envisaged to become self-sustaining eventually, have been expected to produce a minimum of 20 school uniforms per month. The traditional community trust have also be given an allowance per month to cover administration cost for the duration of the project which is wounding up this December  as far as the involvement of Semoy is concerned.  The community trust is expected to be fully in charge of the project.To date the project employs six women who have been sewing, and has potential to increase this number  depending on its performance.

The first batch of the uniforms were officially handed over to the chief and her community by Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernard Esau. The handover, among others, were occasioned  Omaheke governor, Festus Ueitele, Aminuis Constituency Councilor, Ervin Uanguta and other Omaheke regional council officials. “We were guided by the Cabinet special directive to fast track development for this community and with that objective, we have identified to assist the community educationally by providing the school going kids with school uniforms and shoes as well as student assistance for tertiary students from this community,” explains a communiqué from Semoy.
