Namibian cyclist Olivia Shililifa made history at the MTN Khemani Road Classic 2025 in Eswatini, becoming the first woman to win the 100km race. Racing for CYMOT Racing Team on 27 September, Shililifa powered through the tough terrain with determination and focus, leaving competitors behind and crossing the finish line to claim a historic victory for Namibian women’s cycling.
The sprinter faced one of her toughest challenges yet. Eswatini’s hilly terrain tested her both physically and mentally, but she drew strength from a lifetime immersed in sport.
Her mother, a former basketball player, and father, who played soccer, both had to stop due to injury but have remained steadfast supporters. Combined with her coach’s guidance, Shililifa credits this foundation for helping her through the hardest moments, including times when she didn’t reach her goals. Moments that tested her love for the sport.
Even with the challenges, Shililifa remains motivated by faith and the people around her. She has also observed the increasing role of sponsors in supporting athletes, from preparing them for events to providing essential equipment, thereby easing the financial demands of competitive cycling.
Last weekend, Shililifa finished fifth at the Namibian Cycle Classic in Windhoek, demonstrating consistent performance and determination.
Reflecting on her historic win in Eswatini, Shililifa said, “It was such an amazing feeling, and I actually didn’t know that I was the first. For me, I just took it as another training race and another way to challenge myself, like I always love doing.
Looking to the future, she emphasised the importance of personal growth and perseverance, saying: “I want to encourage people always to try to be better than yesterday. Competition starts with yourself, and once you can overcome that, it becomes easier to compete with others.”
With grit, humility, and a record-breaking performance, Shililifa’s journey is not just a personal triumph. It is an inspiring moment for Namibian women’s cycling and a glimpse of the bright future ahead. -hilmanalupe@gmail.com
