Rosh Pinah – Skorpion Zinc mine and Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation have been lauded for their teamwork and outstanding social contributions to the community.

Speaking at a dinner last Friday, the Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy Kornelia Shilunga said she was impressed by the way in which the two mines are organised and run, and commended them on the good social impacts they have made in Namibia, especially in Rosh Pinah.

She commended the two mines for their continued efforts in investing in the region in terms of education and skills development and “spending millions of dollars on various school initiatives and community development programmes”.

//Kharas Regional Governor Lucia Basson, at the same event, also commended the two mines for their great social responsibility saying it is important to appreciate the good work the two mines are doing in terms of social projects.

She applauded them for helping various schools and setting up various training programmes that benefit Namibians.

She further stressed that investing in education is vital for the future of the country as well as for the mines.

Basson, however, urged the mines to fund more government schools where the majority of learners are, as they cannot afford private education, pointing out that the future of the mines’ human resources is vested in both private and government schools.

“Thus assist government in the provision of quality education to a Namibian child,” she said.

The two mines have made significance contributions in the Rosh Pinah community in terms of education, health, infrastructure development, youth and sport development and women economic empowerment.

Noteworthy is the N$7 million upgrade of the Rosh Pinah state hospital in a 50/50 collaboration with government in 2012, the Hoeksteen Combined School class expansion in the same year, with nine classrooms built for N$1.2 million.

Other initiatives include monthly contributions to the Rosh Pinah schools, bursaries awarded to school learners and other training programmes in the community.
