WINDHOEK – SKW-1 maintained their strong lead on the Bank Windhoek Fistball National A-League, following the successful conclusion of matches in round three on Saturday, while Cohen-3 FC also managed to maintain their lead in the National B-League.
The SKW fistball fields were a hive of activity with thrilling action between archrivals SKW-1 and Cohen-1 FC in the opening encounter of the National A-League on Saturday morning. The game did not disappoint and entertained spectators for almost two hours, delivering some top quality action on both sets of the court. SKW-1 stuck to their guns to win the first set 11:8 before Cohen-1, with U-18 national team captain Tristan Minz in attack, came back convincingly, taking the second set 3:11.
The next couple of sets went both ways forcing the game into a deciding seventh set. SKW-1 got the better start into the set taking a 6:4 lead, which they defended vigorously to win the game by 4:3 sets. SKW-1 had also on the day defeated their juniors SKW-2 by 4:2, a result that ensured their lead and therefore remained unbeaten on the day. Cohen-1 FC remains second on the log with SKW-2 trailing closely in 3rd place. Both teams are currently on 21-points, but Cohen-1 FC occupies 2nd place having won more sets than SKW-2. The remarkable unbeaten run of Cohen-3 FC ended on Saturday when the National B-League champions lost their first game in three years to SKW-3. The game was an astoundingly one-sided affair with SKW-3 taking the honours with a 4:0 victory. Despite the defeat, Cohen-3 FC remains on top having won a good number of sets. Still in the National B-League, Swakopmund Fistball Club-2 (SFC-2) managed to record two wins from their three games to take 2nd place on the log. Third placed DTS did not have a good day at the office after losing all their games on the day, forcing them to now contend for a 3rd place finish with SKW-3, who are breathing heavily down their neck.
A 3rd place finish is important, since only the top three finishers on the log will get to qualify for the championship final in September later this year
