WINDHOEK – Elias Nghiikovali Lukas (29 was sentenced to an effective jail term of 28 years in the Windhoek High Court last week Wednesday by Judge Naomi Shivute for killing his ex-girlfriend.
The judge also declared the weapon Lukas used to kill the current boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend and mother of his 3-year-old son, 26-year-old Malakia Matias forfeited to the State. The weapon is a dagger-like knife described as a knife that is similar to knives normally used in butcheries. Judge Shivute told Lukas that although he is a first offender, he viciously attacked the deceased who was unarmed.
“The deceased ran away, but this did not deter the accused. He pursued her until he caught up with her, stabbed her mercilessly and left her lifeless body lying in a pool of blood,” the judge said. She went on to say that Lukas’ actions are a clear indication that he is a danger to society and has no respect for human life. The deceased sustained several severe injuries and was stabbed 11 times, the judge observed. She continued that although Lukas said he was sorry and regretted what he did, his conduct did not show that he was remorseful.
“He was asked by his counsel as to how he felt by causing the deceased’s death and he was hesitant to indicate how he felt,” Judge Shivute said. She said Lukas committed a heinous crime and deserves to be removed from society for a lengthy period of time. According to the judge the arguments of Titus Ipumbu who appeared on behalf of Lukas that the child would suffer, since he will grow up without a father is true. However, it is unfortunately the consequence of a crime for which the accused is entirely to be blamed.
