KEETMANSHOOP – Most parts of the //Kharas region are experiencing cold weather, accompanied by rains since yesterday morning, which to some residents in Keetmanshoop is a rather unusual phenomenon.
Odilo Kgobetsi from the Namibia Meteorological Services explained that these weather conditions are mainly due to a high-pressure system moving over the region from South Africa (Cape Town).
“There is currently a frontal high pressure system moving over the southern parts of Namibia, bringing in cold air and moisture with cloudy conditions,” he added.
Kgobetsi said residents in the //Kharas region can expect a drop in day temperatures ranging up to five degree Celsius during early mornings until the weekend when weather conditions will be a little bit warmer.
“These cold conditions will appear during late nights and early mornings,” he said.
“Conditions will, however, change over the weekend, with day temperatures going up to 23 degrees Celsius by Sunday,” Kgobetsi concluded.
A resident of Keetmanshoop, Agnes Tise (53), described these weather conditions as very unusual, especially this time of the year.
“Growing up in this area, when this happened, we will be normally expecting a long, very cold winter and above average rainy season as was the case with past experiences,” she explained.
Farmers in Karasburg east constituency said they experienced cold weather; however, it is not extreme and there are no rains accompanying it.
“Out of previous experience, when we got extreme cold weather with rain, we used to endure stock losses,” said farmer Kobus van der Merwe.
