By Staff Reporter THE Namibian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has received donations worth N$75 000 as support to its campaign against abuse and neglect of pets. During this holiday season when pets are more likely to be abandoned, lost and neglected as a result of their owners being away, the organisation is always in need of funds. An advertising agency, Interact FCB, and three media organisations, namely, New Era, Die Republikein and One Africa Television contributed to the generous donation. Interact FCB donated creative services in the form of a television commercial and a series of press advertisements reminding people of their responsibilities as pet owners and also of the fact that pets have feelings just like human beings. The media houses donated advertising space to the SPCA. Interact FCB’s Alan Brough said the advertising is controversial and is designed to cause an emotional reaction. The concept of the campaign is to take images of abused and neglected pets and replace the actual animal with a baby or a child. This, says Interact FCB, is quite shocking as people have great empathy with vulnerable children. It aims at communicating the message that parents have a responsibility to their children as well as to their pets, which unfortunately not all accept in the same way.
