Speel Aan debuts

Speel Aan debuts

Namibian cinema has welcomed a remarkable new film, ‘Speel Aan.’ This poignant narrative follows the journey of Peter Cloete, a high school football coach whose life is irrevocably altered by a tragic incident.

Produced by MultiChoice Namibia, in partnership with The Collective and Desert Film Productions, ‘Speel Aan’ is a significant component of the eagerly-awaited Ombura project. The title translates to ‘Play On’ in English.

The film features Dawie Engelbrecht in the role of Peter, who struggles with the consequences of the accident. Hazel Hinda portrays his devoted wife Gizela, while Edo Dice Lutete plays Martin, a family friend who provides comfort and support.

‘Speel Aan’ explores profound themes such as alcoholism, depression and the quest for redemption. Director Errol Geingob characterises the film as ‘deeply personal,’ aiming to elicit strong emotional responses from its audience. The incorporation of Afrikaans, Khoekhoegowab and English sub-titles broadens its accessibility.

Three years later, we witness Peter’s release from prison, holding a pot plant which symbolises a significant connection to his past. The narrative then unfolds, revealing how Peter navigates the aftermath of the accident, and his efforts to maintain his mental well-being.

Thus begins a tale of healing, love and redemption for a fallen coach in the new Namibian film. It is currently available on DStv Catch-Up, DStv Stream or GOtv Stream, alongside other offerings from the Ombura project, including Dubbel Moelikheid (Double Trouble).
