Sport: Indoor training allowed, fans barred

As the nation mourns the passing of Founding President Sam Nujoma, the government announced a raft of directives, among them one limiting sporting activities to preparatory purposes only.

Announcing yesterday, deputy information minister Modestus Amutse said sport activities may still take place in limited circumstances.

“Sports events are allowed in limited instances for predatory purposes and without spectators. Sporting codes that are travelling outside Namibia are not affected by this directive,” Amutse said, adding that, “scheduled school athletics will proceed guided by the necessary decorum of national mourning.

The public is urged to adhere to a sense of decorum and respect, in line with that of the national mourning period.

Earlier, Amutse urged the nation to refrain from large public gatherings and celebrations that could be “deemed as disrespectful” during the mourning period of Nujoma, which started on 9 February 2025.

“The public is advised that the official memorial services will start today (Tuesday) at 18h00 at his residence.

Visitors are allowed from 14h00 to 16h00. Other logistical arrangements will be announced in due course,” he stated.

He added that private events will not be prohibited but the public is requested to adhere to decorum that is consistent with the mourning period.
