Swakopmund
A total of 44 senior golfers from Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Windhoek, Tsumeb and Okahandja teed off in the annual Bank Windhoek Senior Open Swakopmund Golf Championship at the Rossmund Golf Course at Swakopmund last weekend.
The championship formed part of the Bank Windhoek annual Summer Festival, slated for the coast during the festive season.
Golfers, of which 26 were from the host towns Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, participated in the competition played over 36 holes. The overall champion of the event was Eddie van Wyk, who scored 79 points over the two days. He was followed by Achmet Abrahams with 75 points, and Werner Borg with 73 points in that order.
“The three winners are all from the coast, so I guess the home course advantage played a significant role here,” said chief organiser of the event, Tim Botha from Swakopmund Senior Golf Committee.
SUMMER PROGRAMME
“We are proud to be part of an exciting summer programme at the coast and we hope the holiday makers will find a variety of events to keep them entertained,” enthused Riaan van Rooyen, head of corporate communication and social investment.
Currently the Swakopmunder Musikwoche is commemorating its 50th anniversary with a variety of musical concerts taking place around the coastal town. The next event forming part of the Summer Festival is the Kehat Beukes Memorial Chess tourney, to be hosted by the Namibia Chess Federation on December 20 and 21 at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre.
The gathering aims to attract both international travellers and the best of the local chess fraternity. Meanwhile, the Bank Windhoek Henties Bay Open Golf Championship takes place on the 23rd of this month.
On the arts front, Professor Aldo Behrens’ acclaimed musical ‘A Whale in Goreangab – Taking Corruption to Court’ will be performed on December 22 and 23. It will be followed by the Christmas musical ‘Pontius Who?’ from December 27 to 30. Both plays will be performed at the Namib Primary School (NPS) Kulturaula.
‘Pontius Who?’ is an immensely intriguing musical and alternative understanding of the story of Jesus Christ from the perspective of Pontius Pilate, a politician, a strategist, a colonialist, a Roman Governor, a loving husband and a sensitive human being, to boot.
