WINDHOEK – A delegation of the Sports Committee from the Federal German Parliament arrived in Windhoek on Sunday before visiting Zambia (Lusaka) and South Africa (Cape Town).

The aim of the 9-day tour is to visit sports development projects which are partly funded by the Federal Foreign Office or the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in the three Southern African countries.

Namibia has long-term projects in the area of women’s football – the Basketball Artists School and the FIFA Football for Hope Centre in Windhoek. The delegation will also visit a mobile HIV clinic.

Inter-parliamentary exchange is one of the main focal areas of the visit as the delegation will meet parliamentarians and members of government in all three countries while in Namibia, it will have an audience with representatives of the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture.

Other meetings are also in the offing with representatives of the National Olympic and Paralympic Committees of Namibia and Zambia as well as the Namibia Football Association (NFA).

Furthermore, the delegation meets representatives from civil society such as the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Goethe Centre, Namibian-German Foundation for Cultural Cooperation (NaDS), Namibian Institute for Democracy and the Women’s Leadership Centre.

The delegation is headed by Dagmar Freitag (SPD) accompanied by Stephan Mayer (CDU/CSU), Dieter Stier (CDU/CSU), Özcan Mutlu Bündnis 90/Die Grünen and Dr André Hahn (Die Linke.).

Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Girls Centre at NFA Football House followed by a visit to the Goethe Centre, and subsequent meetings with representatives from the Goethe Centre, Namibian-German Foundation on Cultural Cooperation (NaDS), and Namibian Institute for Democracy (NID) Women’s Leadership Centre (WLC) meeting with members of the NOC.
The German delegation will attend the official opening of the Basketball Artists School (BAS) building and also pay visits to the FIFA Football for Hope Centre Windhoek, the football village and the mobile HIV clinic as part of the programme for the African Women’s Championship final.
