WINDHOEK – The Swapo Party Women’s Council (SPWC) wants the government to erect national statues or monuments depicting the immense contribution women have made during the liberation struggle.
The announcement was made on Sunday by SPWC Assistant Secretary for Information and Mobilisation, Hilma Nikanor, following the SPWC’s regional leadership confidence-building workshop, which took place last month. The workshop, which brought together all regional structures of the women’s council, took place during November 22-23, 2013 at Greiters Conference Centre on the outskirts of Windhoek. The women’s council recommended that statues be erected throughout the country of individual women liberation heroines. The council further encouraged women to take advantage of existing educational opportunities and to participate in literacy programmes.
Nikanor added that people with disabilities be included in the party structures by providing opportunities for their participation at all levels. The leadership of the SPWC also recommended that the organization’s secretary seek audience with all media houses on the need for regional coverage. Another recommendation, amongst many, is that a disciplinary committee be established for the SPWC to enforce discipline amongst members. A major concern at Sunday’s meeting pertained to foreign nationals marrying young Namibian girls for the purpose of obtaining Namibian citizenship. “The SPWC is to call on government to amend the Constitution of the Republic of Namibia in regards to the establishment and operation of churches in Namibia,” Nikanor further said.
