Standard Bank joins police to fight cybercrime

As part of its commitment to protecting consumers and preserving the integrity of the financial system, Standard Bank Namibia has partnered with the Namibian Police to deliver targeted training on investigating digital fraud.

This initiative forms part of the bank’s activities for International Fraud Awareness Week 2025, observed globally each November, and reflects the growing need for collaboration between financial institutions and law enforcement in the fight against cyber-enabled crime. Digital fraud is one of the fastest-growing financial threats worldwide. In Namibia, the rise of online banking, mobile payments and e-commerce has created new opportunities for fraudsters, making it essential for investigators to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated tactics.

The training, facilitated by Standard Bank Namibia’s fraud and compliance experts, focused on enhancing investigative capabilities in areas such as phishing, identity theft, account takeovers, and card fraud. Officers were equipped with practical tools to trace digital footprints, analyse transaction data, and preserve electronic evidence-skills critical to building strong cases and securing successful prosecutions.

Roxzaan Witbooi, head of compliance at Standard Bank Namibia, highlighted that “By working hand-in-hand with Nampol, we’re strengthening Namibia’s frontline defence against digital crime and ensuring that investigators are empowered with the knowledge and tools to act swiftly and effectively.” The training also explored frameworks for collaboration between banks and law enforcement to improve response times and enhance outcomes in fraud investigations.

Standard Bank Namibia remains committed to building a fraud-resilient financial ecosystem. Through initiatives like this, the Bank continues to demonstrate its dedication to empowering stakeholders, protecting consumers and reinforcing trust in Namibia’s financial system. -newsroom@nepc.com.na
