Lüderitz
A modern and newly revamped Standard Bank branch officially opened at Lüderitz this week, just as the bank is celebrating 100 years of doing business in Namibia. The first branch opened in Lüderitz in 1915.
At the occasion chief executive of Standard Bank Namibia Vetumbuavi Mungunda said it was exactly 100 years ago since August 19, 1915, that Standard Bank opened its first branch in Namibia.
“In fact Lüderitz is a very special place, as this is the birth town of Standard Bank Namibia,” Mungunda said. According to Mungunda the bank currently has 51 branches and 150 employees across the country.
The Lüderitz branch has a full staff complement of 14 employees and offers a comprehensive array of financial services and products to meet the needs of the local residents.
“We aim to operate in a customer-driven environment – meaning that it’s not all about selling, but importantly it’s about meeting our customers’ expectations,” Mungunda said.
The opening of the revamped branch in Lüderitz follows the recent opening of a branch in Henties Bay in the Erongo region. Standard Bank also intends to open a branch in Oranjemund very soon.
!Nami#nus Constituency Councillor Jan Scholtz said this is a very noble gesture, which speaks to economic development and financial empowerment for the inhabitants of Lüderitz Town. “As you know the //Karas Region promises a lot of development in business and economic activity. Therefore, banking facilities like this one just enhances our vast region even more,” Scholtz said.
He praised Standard Bank for having made significant strides in boosting economic development by establishing various branches across the country.
The 81-year-old Walfgang Biederlack, who was a manager of Standard Bank Lüderitz branch from 1954 to 1969, was also at the event. Ten clients also received special recognition for having banked with Standard Bank for more than 40 years. These included Hjeo Schmidt, who has been with the bank for 60 years, as well as Regina Ananias, who has banked with Standard Bank for 50 years.
