Star of the Week: Paulus Ambunda

Home National Star of the Week: Paulus Ambunda

Our Star of the Week is professional pugilist Paulus Ambunda who was crowned the new International Boxing Organisation (IBO) World Super Bantamweight champion on Saturday in Singapore. Ambunda, 38, became the first Namibian to win a world title at that relatively advanced age when he was crowned world champion for the third time on Saturday after beating Muhamad Ridhwan of Singapore. He reclaimed his IBO world super bantamweight title, which he lost on November 11, 2016 in Windhoek to Mexican boxer Moises Flores during a unification fight for the IBO and World Boxing Association world super bantamweight tiles. Both Ambunda and Ridhwan lasted the full 12 rounds, but it was the Namibian who won the contest, with the judges scoring the fight 115-113,112-115 and 116-111. The age of thirty-five and above is regarded as ‘old’ in this brutal sport where youth is supreme, and boxing is usually a solitary and a highly brutal sport.
