WINDHOEK – It only took African Stars a well-timed tactical substitute move by coach Woody Jacobs and a rampant 2nd half performance to secure a 2-0 victory over Angolan outfit Petro Atletico de Luanda, during their 1st leg of the CAF African Champions League match at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Friday night.

Second half substitute Johannes ‘Boetitjie’ Seibeb rounded off Stars’ performance with a well taken header to give Stars the lead with just less than four minutes remaining on the clock.

A well-engineered pass that was manufactured between the stylish Bradley Wermann and the skilful Meraai Swartbooi saw Seibeb double Stars’ lead. Stars coach Woody Jacobs hailed his charges for the splendid overall performance, particularly in the   2nd half, which he says was inspired by a halftime pep talk.

“I told the guys that they must go out there and just play their game and believe in themselves and they came out well in the second half. We could have scored more, but I’m happy with 2-0. We were the better side and we created so many chances as well. I’m ecstatic about this victory”, boasted Woody during the post-match conference.

Jacobs however refused to get carried away by the victory, saying they still have a long way to go as they are very much aware of what to expect in Luanda in next weekend’s return leg.

“We will be expecting a very hostile and determined Petro in Angola next weekend and now it is back to the drawing board, because we have to plan and ensure that we proceed to the next round. The last 90 minutes will be crucial and we have to be prepared for it as well, but for tonight it was a job well done.”

The former Tura Magic, Civics and Eleven Arrows coach, Jacobs explained that he decided to go with Jamu Ngatjizeko in midfield and use two-goal hero Seibeb as a trump card.

“Seibeb was delighted with the encounter and when he came on he rescued the team in incredible fashion and it goes to show that with the quality players we have, all can play their part and tonight Seibeb showed that and I’m happy for him.”

Stars will now travel to Luanda on Valentine’s Friday and will face Petro de Luanda on Sunday for the final 90 minutes of the fixture and with a 2-0 lead, Jacobs will have to employ a plan that will preserve and ensure their progress to the next round.
