WINDHOEK – A goal apiece by Asprila Wermann and Riaan Cloete propelled African Stars to a well-deserved 2-0 win over table-topping Black Africa in an electrifying MTC Premiership match on Friday night.
After a goalless first half, Woody Jacobs’ fired-up brigade stepped up a gear almost immediately at the resumption and were deserved victors in the end.
The victory moved the Reds within touching distance – just 3 points off the summit and they could draw level with the defending champions if they fashion out a decent result against traditional rivals Tigers in their next assignment.
Eleven Arrows’ relegation woes continued after the seasiders suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of league rookies United Stars at the Rundu Stadium on Saturday. Tomas Muketiwa netted the only goal of the match deep into the second half.
FNB Orlando Pirates defeated PC Blue Boys 1-0 at the Vineta Stadium in Swakopmund with Merwyn Haraseb the coastal outfit’s conqueror with a late strike. Rundu Chiefs eased their relegation worries with a surprise 1-0 triumph away at Ramblers.
Sylvester Nzamene rescued the northerners from the jaws of death with the only goal of the match that could go a long way in prolonging Chiefs’ wobbling lodging in the country’s flagship league.

As has become a trademark in recent outings, the goal scoring duties for the flying Birds were once again placed entirely on the tiny shoulders of speedy striker Ballack Somaeb and free-scoring Nigerian import, Edom Dominique, who both rattled the opposition’s net in the opening half. Gangling striker Quinton Kuruseb pulled a consolation goal back for the visiting Civilians.
Still basking in the sun from their 2-0 victory over Black Africa, sandwiched by the narrow 1-0 loss to the visiting South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Katutura glamour football club African Stars are oozing confidence.
The Reds approach tonight’s catch-up MTC Premiership clash against Tigers in buoyant mood and determined to collect the maximum points at stake to put pressure on the log leaders. The two old foes lock horns at the Sam Nujoma Stadium at 19h00.
