… U-21 netball team grilled in Scotland

WINDHOEK – Veteran local long distance runner Helalia Johannes showed once again that she has very little peers, if any, in local long distance running when she showed her competitors a clean pair of heels to claim first place in the 2nd edition of the annual Dr Sam Nujoma Marathon in the women’s division in Windhoek, on Sunday.

Johannes swept aside a small field of long distance runners as she sped ahead of Anna Amukoto, who finished in second place, with another stalwart long-distance athlete Helena Ipinge adrift in third place. The latter appeared to be severely touched by age as could be attested by the tortoise pace in which she went about her business.

In the men’s senior category, Gladwin Mzazi, from South Africa and a relative newcomer in this neck of the woods surprised friend and foe when he left old time campaigners Johannes Naitembu and Reonard Namupala in the lurch to claim overall first place.

Namibia on the receiving end in Youth Netball Champs

Meanwhile, the Namibian Under-21 netball team is finding the going tough on their United Kingdom safari after suffering back-to-back defeats in their opening two matches in the 2103 World Youth Netball Championships underway in Glasgow, Scotland.

Namibia found her self on the ropes against reigning champions Australia in their opening match – going down by 17 baskets to 91 before bending the knee to Fiji (36-61) in the 2nd match on European soil.
