The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) held its first annual fashion show on Friday night, featuring garments designed and made by students.
Up to six student designers helped produce the show, themed ‘Green and Innovative’, and over 150 guests attended at the NUST Basement.
The show is part of the fashion merchandising and design curriculum. All funds raised will go towards community engagement activities. The show aimed at promoting new brands, as well as showcasing the rare unknown talents of students.
The designers also showcased designs made from recycled materials, with a glimpse of glamour.
Although the show started a bit later than expected, student designer Wahamelelwe Naha Neumbo opened the show with her recycled material garments, a combination of nylon and paper and used colour blocking on some of her most outstanding designs.
Other impressive garments were by Beatrice Ilonga, who displayed her talent for design with attire made only of plastic. One of her best designs was an evening gown that absolutely stunned the audience.
One of the designers, Petrina Mathews, showcased her own jewelry, with a hint of African aesthetics, while Anna Mungandjela put on show her sophisticated and glamorous outfits made from cotton and polymer.
Nancy Haikali showed off her best collections ever seen and her designs, which some compared to the designs of Eva Miarka and Ingo Shanyenge. Naikali is clearly very talented, as the models looked glamorous in her designs on the catwalk.
The aim of the show was to enhance communication between students, communities and the university.
