Supporters’ jersey unveiled

Supporters’ jersey unveiled

The Namibia sport supporters’ jersey was officially launched yesterday morning in Windhoek, marking a significant step in promoting national unity through sports.

The jersey comes in three colours, red, blue, and white, and presented by the Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission, Freddy Mwiya.

Mwiya, while giving the background on the supporters’ attire, said  the initiative follows the first phase, completed last year, where all national teams received tracksuits. The current phase, which focuses on branding Namibia through sports, introduces the supporters’ jerseys as a symbol of national pride and unity.

He added that the T-shirts are designated for the supporters of all 56 national sports teams, ensuring a unified and recognisable presence at events where Namibian teams compete.

The minister of sports Agnes Tjongarero emphasised the crucial role of supporters, stating that they serve as ambassadors for Namibia wherever they go. “Supporters are the ones who cheer when we are not there, shouting for our people,” she
said.

Tjongarero highlighted that this initiative will serve as a unifying force, echoing the vision of late president Hage Geingob, who dreamed of building a Namibian house where no one is left behind. She called on all Namibians, young and old, to wholeheartedly embrace and promote the Namibian jersey at every opportunity.

“Our strength as a nation is amplified when we present ourselves as a cohesive unit, whether cheering for our teams on home soil or abroad,” she noted.

“These jerseys are more than just clothing; they symbolise our shared identity, unity in diversity, and unwavering pride in being Namibians. They foster social value, bravery, and a deep sense of national pride.

All Namibians, regardless of where they are, should get a jersey. But this is not free,” she added, encouraging the purchase of the jerseys as a tangible show of support.
