The environment ministry, in collaboration with the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia (EIF) and the Sustainable Development Advisory Council (SDAC) recently launched its 4th edition of the Sustainable Development Awards under the theme ‘Investing in Our Planet’.
The aim of the awards is to identify and reward institutions and individuals who have demonstrated leadership, innovation and excellence in environmentally-friendly practices, while encouraging performance of best sustainability practices.
The awards recognise institutions and individuals across 11 categories, ranging from private sector champions to thought leadership, each acknowledging the integration of environmental, social, economic and management aspects into their practices. This edition highlights the importance of investing in the environment for a sustainable future.
Line minister Pohamba Shifeta said investing in nature means more than financial commitments; “it’s about bold and prompt action”.
He added that from green infrastructure to reframing conversations, they must converge efforts to address environmental crises linked to climate change. As stewards of this planet, they have the momentum to build resilience for a future of sustainable, inclusive growth.
“Our theme underscores a fundamental truth – our future hinges on investing in the well-being of our planet. It calls upon governments, institutions, businesses and civil society to accelerate change towards a prosperous, sustainable world. It’s a call to reduce our carbon footprint, protect biodiversity and promote sustainable practices,” he added.
Shifeta encouraged all the active participants from all sectors to take part in the awards.
“Let this be a platform for showcasing innovative solutions, impactful initiatives, and a commitment to environmental stewardship. The awards are not just accolades, they represent a shared vision for a resilient, sustainable and equitable Namibia,” he noted.
