By Kuvee Kangueehi GOBABIS The Swapo Party District Coordinator for the Kalahari Constituency, Antanasius Katamelo, appeared in the Gobabis Regional Court on charges of housebreaking and theft on Tuesday morning. Katamelo, who was arrested last weekend, was granted bail of N$1 000 and is expected to appear in court again next month. He allegedly stole four computers from the Roman Catholic School at Epukiro in the Omaheke Region. Police spokesperson in the Omaheke Region, Michael Matengu, confirmed the incident and said some of the computers were found at the Swapo Party Office at Tjsaka and others at Katamelo’s residence. This is not the first time Swapo Party leaders at regional level in Omaheke have been charged with criminal activities. Last year, a member of the Gobabis District Executive, Castro Kavari, was charged with bribery after he allegedly received N$2 500 from a commercial farmer to destroy evidence regarding a labour case. Kavari’s case was also reported to the party secretariat, and he resigned from the party before they could act. The case is still pending with the regional court. Salomon Hepundjua, who was Secretary for the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) in the Omaheke Region, also resigned last year after it was discovered that he first misappropriated over N$7 000 which came from the National Youth Council (NYC) and in a separate incident used for his private expenses the amount of N$2 500 which was intended for the railway project. Contacted for comment, the Swapo Party Regional Coordinator, Festus Ueitele, said he was not aware of the incident but would contact Katamelo to obtain more information on the case.
