Home Sports Swimming gala starts tomorrow

WINDHEOK – It is that time of the year again when the crème de la crème of Namibian swimmers grill each other in the popular Bank Windhoek Long Course Swimming Championships, slated for the Olympia swimming pool in Windhoek tomorrow.

The gala will run from tomorrow until Sunday, March 1, 2015. “This premier annual event serves as the best time to shine for all our talented swimmers”, said Bettina Steffen, President of the Namibia Swimming Union (NASU).

Swimmers from Oranjemund, Swakopmund, Mariental and Windhoek will compete in this prestigious event. For the first time, this gala is a Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) approved gala, which can be used to qualify for the World Championships in Kazan, Russia, later this year.

“It also gives us great pleasure to announce that all of our senior international swimming stars such as Zanre Oberholzer, Daniela Lindemeier, Toni Roth and Sonja Adelaar will all be participating at this event. Not only are we looking forward to having them in our midst, but also all our Region 5 swimmers, as well as the up-and-coming junior swimmers with the likes of Zune Weber, Heleni Stergiadis, Corne le Roux and the Esslinger sisters”, concluded Bettina.

A total of 163 swimmers will take part and together they will have 1391 splashes. The gala will start on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 17:30 to 18:46 and will continue on Friday, February 27 from 15:00 until 18:20. On Saturday, February 28, 2015, the gala will resume at 09:00 to 18:14.

On Sunday, March 1, 2015, the last day of the event, the gala starts at 09:00 and ends at 14:11. The public is invited to come and support the swimmers as they compete in this prestigious event.
