Takes Issue with School Fees

Re: An open letter to the Minister of Education on the issue of the way Donatus Secondary School in Otjiwarongo charges their school fees.

First and foremost, let me say thank you to The Namibian newspaper for keeping the whole nation informed of the activities in terms of news happenings all around the world.

I thought I should inform the Minister of Education on the way the abovementioned school is being run in terms of school development funds.

Donatus School is not a private school but a government school like any other government school in Namibia. My concern is on the issue of school funds that have to be paid every month like a pre-primary school (kindergarten) and when you look at the quality of education offered at the school, it is not up to the required standards compared to the other school in town, that is Vooruit school.

Mr Minister, let me tell you why we are having this situation at Donatus and not at Vooruit.

The principal of Donatus is a white man and all his kids are at Vooruit school and he only pays N$370 for the whole year while at Donatus, we are paying N$140 per month.

Mr Minister, these whites, all of the their kids are at Vooruit School, and it is so funny that some of us with kids who cannot speak Afrikaans find it difficult to get entry into Vooruit, otherwise we would have been there a long time ago.

The other thing with Donatus is that throughout the month the principal sends kids that have to pay this and that in addition to the “normal school fund”.

What I am asking from you, Mr Minister, is your intervention in the issue of school funds being paid on a monthly basis.

I would have understood if the school would be paying for teachers’ salaries.
These white (teachers) who are still teaching at this school will always come up with many things because they know that their kids are not part of the school.

Please kindly, Mr Minister, your attention to this will be appreciated.
Thank you and may the almighty bless you.
