Namibia’s triathletes will be the first in competition for their country at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The games kicked off with the opening ceremony yesterday in Birmingham, England.
Divan du Plooy will take to the triathlon track at 10h00 Namibian time today in the men’s individual sprint distance.

He told Nampa Wednesday that he is well prepared and feeling good ahead of the competition.

“I have been working on my swimming a lot and come the day of the competition, I am hoping to get close to the main guys so that I can compete well,” he said.

Du Plooy added he has seen most of his competitors in action on television, so he understands what to expect from them, hence he is not under any pressure.

From 11h00 onwards, the boxing competition starts. Namibia’s boxers are Jonas Jonas in the lightweight category at 65kg and Tryagain Ndevelo (featherweight 54kg).

At around 14h00, bowlers Carel Aron Olivier and John Pierre Fouche will step onto the lawn in the men’s pairs competition.

Saturday will see the long-distance runners take the road at 06h00. They are Tomas Rainhold in the men’s race and Helalia Johannes and Alina Armas in the women’s race.

On Sunday, swimmers Alex Skinner and Ronan Wantenaar will dive into the pool at around 9h30. Skinner will compete in the freestyle heats and Wantenaar in the breaststroke heats.

A few minutes later, triathletes Dirk Jacobus Coetzee, Jean Paul Burger, Anri Krugel and Imke Jagau will be in action in mixed team relay.
They are part of 30 Namibians and 71 Commonwealth nations gathered in Birmingham to compete in different sports codes till 08 August 2022.

Other Namibians will represent the country in track and field for able-bodied athletes and para-athletics, cycling and wrestling.
