RUNDU – Police in Kavango West have arrested a 19-year-old male for being in possession of 115 parcels of cannabis, collectively weighing about 68kg and valued at N$682 850.
The arrest was made on Wednesday this week, at the Mururani police checkpoint after a police search.
“During the search, the police found a suspect in possession of four suitcases containing 115 parcels of cannabis. The suspect was arrested and is due for court on Friday. He is expected to appear at the Rundu Magistrate’s Court,’’ said the Kavango West police commander, Josephat Abel. According to the police, the suspect was travelling from Rundu en route to Otjozondjupa region.
In a separate case earlier this week, the Kavango West police recorded a case of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving and failure to render assistance to an injured person as well as failing to ascertain the nature and extent of damages sustained after the accident.
The accident occurred on Sunday at about 01h00 at Nkurenkuru-Kahenge main road (B10 road) near Mayara village. It is alleged that the driver of a white Volkswagen Polo was driving from the east to the western direction, upon reaching Mayara, he collided head-on with a white Toyota Corolla, which was travelling from the opposite direction, causing the Corolla to overturn.
The driver of the Corolla died on the spot. Police confirmed he was a police officer, identified as Warrant Officer Paulus Hango (51), and a member of the explosive subdivision at Kavango West.
The driver of the Volkswagen Polo initially fled from the scene but later turned himself in at Nkurenkuru police station.
