WINDHOEK – The Namibian Police yesterday reported that a 10-year-old year boy died in a hut fire on Wednesday in the Okatopi area of the Oshikoto Region.
The boy’s 70-year-old grandmother sustained serious burn wounds in the same fire and was admitted to the Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital.
The victim James Iyambo Sori, 10, was burnt beyond recognition, while his grandmother Selma Abisai escaped with serious burn wounds all over her body.
According to Sergeant Slogan Matheus the fire started in the hut they used for cooking and spread to the sleeping area on Wednesday night at Okatopi.
Police also reported a case of rape at Otjiwarongo.
It is alleged a 34-year-old suspect took the 11-year-old victim to a toilet by force where he had sexual intercourse with her under coercive circumstances on Wednesday at around 16h00.
The suspect was arrested and is due to appear in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court today (Friday).
A 19-year-old male was fatally stabbed in Mariental.
Timotheus Fredericks died in the Mariental State Hospital four hours after he was stabbed with a knife in the neck.
Police suspect that alcohol was involved.
The adult male suspect was arrested and is due to appear in the Mariental Magistrate’s Court today.
A case of drowning was reported at Omupale in the Omusati Region.
It was reported that 16-year-old Tobias Shivute Erastus told his brother he was going swimming in a big water tank in front of their homestead.
He was found dead at about 16h00 on Wednesday.
The body was taken to the Okahao Police Mortuary for an autopsy.
A case of culpable homicide was opened by the police after an off-duty police officer was killed by a Nissan truck at about 22h00 on Tuesday near the Ongha Police Station along the Ondangwa-Oshikango Main Road.
It is alleged the police officer, 61-year-old Gabriel Ndakote was walking next to the road at the Ongha Police Station where he was stationed when the incident occurred.
The police opened a case of culpable homicide against the 54-year-old driver of the truck, but he was not arrested as the police still had to compile a docket and send it to the prosecutor-general for a decision on whether to prosecute or not.
