WINDHOEK – As part of its school tennis promotion programme, the Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) hosted a Tennis Teachers’ Course at the Katutura Youth Centre over the weekend.

Close to 20 teachers and volunteers from the Khomas Region, most of who are already actively engaged in promoting tennis at their respective schools, attended the course to improve their coaching skills.

According to NTA Tennis Development Co-ordinator Kallie Heese, the main aim of the course was to introduce teachers to the “Play & Stay” programme and for them to learn how to run a school league and to organise other competitions.

On Friday, most of the sessions were of a more theoretical nature conducted in a lecture room at the new Basketball Artist School. Participants were given handouts and instruction manuals to improve lesson presentations at schools or clubs.

On Saturday, course participants had to apply their practical skills at the youth centre’s courts. The course programme ended at noon with the participants receiving certificates of attendance.

Sonja Theron, on behalf of all participants, thanked the three tennis development coaches Nqobilizwe Moyo, SP van Wyk and Kallie Heese for the very interesting and motivating two days of theoretical and practical training.

Heese appreciated the motivation of all course participants and encouraged them to apply the newly acquired skills at their respective schools.

“We will see even more enthusiasm and passion at our tennis inter-school league competitions as we already saw in the past,” he said. Heese also thanked the Basketball Artist School for providing a room for theory classes.
