Tennis tournament concludes successfully

The first edition of the Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) senior tournament took place over the weekend, with organisers praising the high level of competition displayed by the players.

The tournament was held at the Central Tennis Club in Olympia, Windhoek from Friday to Sunday.

In the men’s singles final, Ruben Yssel emerged victorious after edging Nguvi Hinda in an exhilarating men’s final to secure the first title of the year.

In the women’s singles, Mari van Schalkwyk defeated Joanivia Bezuidenhout in an exciting final to claim the top spot.

In the men’s doubles, Mickey Alemu and Sp van Wyk triumphed over Yssel and Dickson Phiri.

In the women’s doubles, Bezuidenhout and Van Schalkwyk dominated Larushka Kruger and Paula Zal to clinch the title.

Tournament director Larushka Kruger hailed the event as a great success. He stressed the impressive quality of tennis, and the increased participation of female players.

“The NTA hosted our first senior tournament of the year this past weekend. Overall, it was a great success. We had a strong turnout with eight women participating, which is a big milestone, along with 14 men competing. The competition was intense, with several matches going into three sets,” she said.

“Three out of the four finals were three-set matches, which is always exciting to see. We appreciate everyone who took part, and look forward to even more entries in our next tournament, “she added.

The next NTA tournament is scheduled for 14 to 16 March in Windhoek.

Organisers are hopeful for even greater participation.

“We encourage all affiliated members to register once entries open. The more people compete, the more we contribute to the growth and development of tennis in Namibia,” Kruger enthused.
