The faces and stories of Namibian comedy

The faces and stories of Namibian comedy

What began as a warm evening of laughter at Vinyls Music Cafe in 2021, has grown into one of the most popular monthly customs in Windhoek.

For more than three years, Savanna Comedy Hour, which was created by comic Aloys “Axarob” Murorua and event planner Vernon van Wyk, has regularly packed venues and delivered punchlines from the best comedians in Namibia.

“This laughter-fueled powerhouse has sold out every edition since its debut and will continue with an incredible lineup of comics and a dash of live music that is sure to have the audience laughing and dancing,” Van Wyk said excitedly.

He added that Savanna Comedy Hour also serves as a dynamic platform for both emerging and established comedians to showcase their talents, offering a unique space where creativity, humour and diverse comedic styles can flourish.

“It offers aspiring artists a priceless chance to get noticed, develop a following, and hone their skills in front of an audience. It also serves as a platform for seasoned comedians to re-engage with audiences, try out new material, and motivate the upcoming generation of comedians,” said Van Wyk as he was busy putting the final touches on the comedy show, which took place recently.

The duo said that the Savanna Comedy Hour is essential to fostering the comedy scene and honouring the diversity of humour in all its manifestations since it brings together a broad spectrum of voices and humorous viewpoints.

“This initiative aims to create a platform for talented comedians, both established and upcoming in Namibia, to do what they love and make a name for themselves in the stand-up comedy industry while at the same time bringing the audience a moment of much-needed joy and laughter,” said Murorua, otherwise known as Axarob.

He added that the June edition of the Comedy Hour featured seasoned comedians such as Courage The Comedian, Ritha, Wilbard and Shefi Grandé, formerly known as Kris with a K, and newcomer, Frans Shikulo, and a musical performance by fast-rising vocalist ‘Enkal.i’

The Savanna Comedy Hour is hosted every first Thursday of the month.
