WINDHOEK – The first round of matches in the popular Bank Windhoek National Volleyball League concluded last weekend at the SKW sports grounds in Windhoek and in Grootfontein at the NDF Military Base.
In the Ladies League, Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) won both their opening games after brushing aside Polytechnic of Namibia (Polytech) and Revivals Volleyball Club (RVC) in straight sets to go top of the log standings.
Khomas Nampol Volleyball Club (KNVC) and the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) are in second and third places. Both KNVC and NDF are closely trailed by DTS and RVC in 4th and 5th places and any slip-up in the 2nd round could possibly see either RVC or DTS going 2nd on the log.
The Polytech team, which is made up of young students, some of whom still lack the basic techniques, lost both their games over the weekend. However, their coach is confident that his team will learn from the experience gained through playing against stronger teams and hopefully catch up in the coming rounds.
RVC failed in displaying their usual aggressive play which saw them losing in straight sets against SKW, but however managed to find solace via a victory over Polytech.
In Grootfontein, Oshikoto Nampol Volleyball Club (ONVC) lost both their games against NDF and DTS. The DTS team struggled to beat ONVC as some of their top players were absent and thus struggled to put up a decent show but eventually went on to win the encounter 3:2.
Meanwhile, four games were played in the Men’s League and the NDF versus KNVC match was the pick of the weekend, as it was the decisive game for the ‘half season crown’.
Supporters from both teams were kept on the edge of their seats with some thrilling action as both sides were hungry for victory. It was a very tough game for both teams but NDF managed to pull through via a 3:1 victory, although all sets were very close.
In other action, DTS had a bad day at the office after they lost their match against NDF-A, 3:1. DTS failed to gather themselves and again suffered another defeat at the hands of NDF-B in straight sets, 3:0.
The top team after the first round is NDF A and KNVC in second place. Both teams are leading with far higher points than the next two teams, Unam and newcomer, Eleven Warriors Volleyball Club (EWVC).
