ONGWEDIVA – The MTC Netball Namibia Premier League delivered an action-packed weekend of high-intensity matches at the Oshana Gymnasium netball courts in Ongwediva. Teams battled it out in scorching conditions during Rounds 12 and 13.
Saturday highlights
In one of the most anticipated clashes of Round 12 on Saturday, Eastern Chiefs clinched a narrow 33-31 victory over Tigers in a tense encounter that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
Chiefs’ standout performer Sandrina Muhunguko was named Player of the Match after her composed leadership and all-around contribution helped secure the win. Elsewhere, Cuca Tops fell 46-28 to a resurgent Unam Jaguars, who displayed grit and skill throughout the game.
Grace Matyayi, Jaguars’ wing defence, dominated play with a standout performance that earned her the Player of the Match honour.
Otjozondjupa Nampol, one of the league’s most exciting and in-form teams, showcased their dominance with a commanding 54-27 win over Afrocat Lions.
Star player Rosalia Nanghonda was in fine form and rightly walked away with the Player of the Match award. A scheduled fixture between Wanderers and Unam Ogongo was not played.
Ogongo were awarded full points after Wanderers failed to show up.
Sunday showdowns
Sunday action opened with Otjozondjupa Nampol continuing their brilliant form, crushing Cuca Tops 60-19 in their second game of the weekend.
Once again, Rosalia Nanghonda dazzled on court, earning her second Player of the Match award.
On Court B, Extreme Eagles faced Unam Jaguars in a tightly contested game that saw the Eagles narrowly prevail 33-30.
Usuta Muvangua, the rock-solid goal defender for the Eagles, collected her fourth Player of the Match award this season.
Speaking after the match, Muvangua acknowledged the toughness of the encounter, describing it as a “tight game” that tested their resilience.
Afrocat Lions bounced back later in the day with a well-earned 44-32 win over Mighty Gunners.
Venyekerera Mahare of the Lions was named Player of the Match for her influential role in securing the victory.
Meanwhile, Namibian Correctional Services (NCS) secured a strong 49-30 victory over Unam Ogongo, with Elmarien !Haoses delivering a clinical performance to guide her side to victory.
In a separate fixture, Tigers returned to winning ways, defeating Cuca Tops 47-22.
Their goal defender Hileni Thomas impressed with a stellar display that earned her the Player of the Match nod.
Eastern Chiefs hold off Mighty Gunners
Eastern Chiefs rounded off their weekend with another tight victory, edging Mighty Gunners 45-43 in a thrilling encounter. Defensive powerhouse Melitta Hunga was instrumental in the Chiefs’ back-to-back successes and was named Player of the Match for the second time this weekend. Reflecting on the game, Hunga described it as “tough and not easy”, praising both teams for their fighting spirit.
Forfeits and fixtures
Otjozondjupa Nampol gained additional points after Wanderers failed to honour their fixtures, compounding the team’s disappointing weekend.
