With financial assistance from the Embassy of Finland and FNCC, The National Theatre of Namibia is presenting the theatre play “Ubu Roi” on October 26-27 at NTN Backstage as part of its ongoing Theatre Zone Project. Advance tickets are on sale at the NTN Box Office for N$30 or alternatively at the door at a price of N$40. Doors open at 19h00 and the show starts at 20h00.
Directed by Queran Kannemeyr ,”Ubu Roi” was written by Alfred Jarry in 1891 and performed at the Salle du Nouveau Theatre in 1896.
The play is about an extremely greedy and self-centred government official, Ubu, who seeks to enrich himself by overthrowing the government, an idea that was suggested by his wife, Ma Ubu. They accomplish this with the help of some other officials.
However, Ubu becomes so greedy that he starts executing the wealthy people and taking their titles, but this does not satisfy Ubu at all as he continues further to tax the common men. He soon finds himself in a battle with both the former king and his own followers. He escapes to set forth his greed in another country.
Bring your entire family to see what will happen with this greedy man!
This production will also be judged for the up coming theatre awards scheduled for November 10.
