Walvis Bay

A one-year-old boy tragically drowned in a fishpond at Walvis Bay on Monday afternoon.

According to the acting crime coordinator in the Erongo Region, Detective Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu, the incident happened at a house in Moses Garoëb Street at around 15h25.

Iikuyu said the toddler, identified as Xander Visser, allegedly left the house unnoticed through an open door and went to the fishpond in the yard.

It is suspected that the toddler could have fallen into the pond while reaching out for a fish. No foul play is suspected and an inquest docket was opened.

The Walvis Bay police have also opened an inquest docket into the death of a 38-year-old man that was found dead at TransNamib station at Swakopmund on Tuesday morning. The deceased, identified as Jacobus Boois from Rehoboth, apparently boarded the train in Windhoek on Monday evening.

According to Iikuyu, a train attendant on Monday night observed the man was apparently sleeping in his seat and his head was swinging back and forth. However, he did not report that he was not feeling well. “The man got off the train around 07h50 at Swakopmund and was found several minutes later lying next to the railway. He was pronounced dead by the paramedics upon arrival,” stated Iikuyu.

Boois was employed at Husab mine outside Swakopmund.
